Full Name: Matthew Scott Garza
Born: November 11, 1983 Selma,California
Bats: R Throws: R
College: Fresno State University
Matt Garza was selected 25th by the twins in 2005 out of Fresno State. He made his way up to the majors in august, after pitcher Fransico Liriano was hurt. Even though he did not throw many innings in the minors, and didn't pitch well in college. For him to be a above average pitcher he'll need to have more confidence when facing Lefty's and have more stamina as he usually loses some touch at the end of games.
Here are some of his numbers from the minors:
2005 A: 3-3 3.54 era 64 K's in 56 innings
2006 A+: 5-1 1.42 era 53 k's in 44.1 innings
2006 AA: 6-2 2.51 era 68 k's in 57.1 innings
2006 AAA: 3-1 an amazing 1.85 era 33 k's in 34 innings
After his amazing year in the minors, he was completely too good for all minor leaguers he got his call up. Though he didn't have a good start to his career, he's somebody to keep your eye on for the 2007 season.
Here's how is 2006 MLB season went:
3-6 5.76 era
Fastball: Garza throws a 93-95 MPH fastball with good late movement but unlike his other pitches he relies on his fastball and has confidence in it when he throws it. Its rated as the best fastball in the system. He tends to rely to much on it making him hittable.
Slider: Clocked in the mid to high 80's with good movement, when he gains confidence in this pitch it will be a plus pitch for him
Curveball: He throws a 78 mph looping curve ball with good control but like his other breaking pitches lacks confidence to throw it
Changeup: His changeup shows potential lacks command with it.
The Future: He should make the team out of ST but if not look for him to get a call up in june and become the teams #2 starter. When Liriano gets back he will become a solid #3 starter and if the twins are able to keep Santana will have one of the best rotations in the mlb.
