Born: February 20, 1985 Cedar Rapids,Iowa
Height: 6-4
Weight: 200
Bats: L Throws: L
High School: Xavier (Cedar Rapids,IA)
Drafted out of High-School Sweeney was pushed through his entire pro-career. The white sox know the potential of this kid and even though he has not had a huge year at any level, the power started to come last year in AAA.
Rotoworlds says:
"However, with his power finally starting to emerge, he was surprisingly productive as a 21-year-old in Triple-A last year. From June through August, he hit 11 homers, one fewer than the 12 he had in his 1,185 previous at-bats since being drafted in the second round in 2003. In August alone, he had 15 extra-base hits in 106 at-bats."
Rotoworld goes on to say that when he fills out more they believe he will be a 25 homerun guy who can hit for average.
Though only 21 years old he got his first call up to the big leagues this year he didin't have much success but he only had 35 at bats.
Here's a look at his minor league numbers starting from A+:
2004 A+: .283 7 homeruns 64 rbi (19 years old)
2005 AA: .298 1 homerun 47 rbi
2006 AAA: .296 13 homeruns 70 rbi
Batting: He will always be a good hitter who will maintain a good average anywhere from .290 to 320. He also is developing good power and when he fills out he should be a 20+ homerun guy.
Fielding: He showed this year that he could be a solid CF, although his future is in RF. He has decent speed and a great arm.
Speed: He is not very fast and also not to good of a base runner. Though his base running skills should get much better with experince, we can't see him stealing more then 15 bases a year.
The Future: Ryan Sweeney will compete for a CF job this spring and he is still only going to be 22 years old. Sweeney will become a solid mlb hitter hitting for both power and average. If he dosen't make the team this year look for him as a mid-season call up and to take over for Jermaine Dye in 2008.
